Grand Theft Auto je herní série, která zanechala nezaměnitelnou stopu v herním průmyslu. Je známá pro své pohlcující světy, sugestivní příběhy a široký výběr vozidel a zbraní, a stala se jednou z nejoblíbenějších a nejúspěšnějších sérií historie. Avšak nezačalo to jako inovativní série, jak ji známe dnes.

V jeho skromných počátcích byl Grand Theft Auto jednoduchá akční adventura v provedení 2D pohledu shora, vydaná v roce 1997. Vyvinutá skotskými vývojáři, umožňovala hráčům převzít roli zločince a postupovat v kriminálním podsvětí ve fiktivních městech inspirovaných skutečnými lokacemi. Původně nazvaná Race’n’Chase, měla být hra mezi policisty a zloději, ale poptávka hrát za zločince vedla k změně směru.

Navzdory zastaralé grafice a některým smíšeným recenzím, získala hra pozornost díky své kontroverzní povaze, kterou záměrně zvyšovala marketingová kampaň hry. Tato kontroverze stále rostla s vydáním pokračování, Grand Theft Auto 2, které obdrželo silnou kritiku kvůli grafice a hratelnosti. Nicméně, vydání Grand Theft Auto III vše změnilo.

Grand Theft Auto III byla revoluční hra, která představila plně 3D otevřený herní svět, stanovující nový standard pro sérii. Pokračuje v evoluci a překračuje hranice herního průmyslu, uchvacuje hráče svými pohlcujícími světy a angažovanými příběhy. Grand Theft Auto překonal kontroverze, které s ním souvisí, a stal se kulturním fenoménem, který zanechal trvalý dopad v herním světě.
