Discover the World from Home with the New Virtual Adventure Series for Seniors in Macomb Township

Poznaj świat bez wychodzenia z domu dzięki nowej serii wirtualnej podróży dla seniorów w Macomb Township

In today’s digital age, seniors in Macomb Township no longer have to leave the comfort of their own homes to explore the wonders of the world. Thanks to the Virtual Adventure Series offered by Macomb Township Parks and Recreation and Macomb Senior Living Community, seniors can embark on virtual journeys to destinations like Mardi Gras, Ireland, and Greece, all from within the boundaries of their own town.

The program utilizes virtual reality goggles and Rendever software, allowing seniors to discover new places through the magic of virtual reality. In addition to using the goggles, seniors also have the opportunity to socialize with other participants and enjoy snacks inspired by the chosen destination.

“What we’re offering here is virtual reality for seniors,” says Aubrey Brohl, the Macomb Township Senior Citizen Programmer. “It’s not just your typical gaming console; it’s more of an experience, a tool that allows you to swim with dolphins or skydive. Seniors can travel to different places if they wish.”

The Oakleigh community provides specialized care for seniors, focusing on their memory, well-being, and overall quality of life. Kelly Brent, the Director of Community Relations, shares that the use of virtual reality through Rendever is a regular offering at Oakleigh. With this technology, seniors can travel without leaving Oakleigh and revisit places from their past, such as their childhood home. The pilot program was launched at Oakleigh about a year ago and has garnered significant interest and positive feedback from residents.

Now, the virtual travel technology is available to seniors in Macomb Township as well. Kelly Brent and Aubrey Brohl have curated a series of virtual travel themes that will be offered as part of the program. Each month, seniors will have the opportunity to experience a new virtual destination.

The first virtual journey in the Virtual Adventure Series took place on January 9th, featuring a winter wonderland theme where seniors got to experience Iceland. The program is facilitated by the Oakleigh team, who prepares the entire experience, allowing seniors to simply put on the goggles and enjoy the journey.

The next virtual destination seniors will be able to explore is Mardi Gras, scheduled for February 13th at 10:00 am. Registration for this program is now open and will close on February 13th. To register, visit the website register.macomb-mi.gov/ViewCourseActivityDetails.aspx?id=C15048 or call 586-992-2900. The Senior Center is located at 51210 Alma Drive in Macomb Township.

The cost of participating in the Virtual Adventure Series is $5 for residents of Macomb Township and $10 for non-residents. Each session can accommodate approximately 40 participants, and advance registration is required. The virtual journey to Ireland will take place on March 12th, followed by Greece on April 9th.
