Technological Advancements Reshape the Future of Riot Games Employees

Rozwój technologiczny wstrzymuje losy pracowników Riot Games

Riot Games, the renowned developer of the popular game League of Legends and the hit series Arcane, is set to lay off approximately 530 employees, which accounts for 11% of its workforce. This decision was announced on Monday afternoon.

The company explains that the reduction in workforce is necessary as it aims to focus on fewer but more impactful projects. “We have become a company that has lost its focus. We have too many things in progress,” stated Dylan Jadeja, CEO of Riot Games, in a letter to the employees. “Some of our significant investments have not yielded the desired results. Our costs have risen to an unsustainable level, putting the essence of our business at risk.”

As part of the restructuring, Riot Forge, the department collaborating with other studios on smaller games, will be discontinued. Additionally, the team dedicated to the game Legends of Runeterra will be downsized to ensure the sustainable growth of the game.

Riot Games, operating as a subsidiary of the Chinese technology company Tencent, boasts several popular esports game series, including League of Legends, and is also venturing into the entertainment industry with the Netflix series Arcane.

Despite the reduction in workforce, Riot Games emphasizes its commitment to esports and entertainment. “Our relationship with the players is incredibly important to us, which is why we will continue to create gaming experiences that have a significant impact on how it feels to be a player,” wrote Jadeja in his letter.

The downsizing at Riot Games comes just a few days after significant layoffs at Google, YouTube, and Amazon, including hundreds of Twitch employees—a popular livestreaming platform often used by esports creators.
