A new training program for rooftop workers utilizing online learning and virtual reality exercises has recently been launched in the United Kingdom. The Certified Blended Learning Course on Roof Work enables participants to complete the theoretical part of the course online, which was previously conducted in person during a one-day session.

Developed by Arco Professional Safety Services, the course has received approval from the Mast & Tower Safety (MATS) Group and accreditation from the Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR). Its main objective is to equip participants with the necessary skills and experience for safe access to flat roofs in both protected and unprotected areas.

In this version of the Rooftop Worker Scheme training, participants are required to complete seven online modules, which they can access as often as they like. The topics covered include regulations on working at height, risk assessment awareness, roof hazards and control measures, checking and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), controlling the safe use of portable ladders, edge protection, horizontal and vertical systems – permanent and temporary, climbing techniques using harnesses, ropes, and fixed systems, as well as emergency procedures.

Upon completion of the training, participants have 90 days to take part in practical training sessions and an examination at one of four possible locations: Stafford, Bracknell, Trafford, or Linlithgow in Scotland. The Rooftop Worker Scheme certificate will remain valid for three years.
