The Pokemon Company Takes Action Against Palworld in Copyright Infringement Case

The Pokemon Company, renowned worldwide for its iconic brand, has finally released an official statement regarding Palworld. The company stated that it intends to investigate and take appropriate measures to combat intellectual property infringements related to Pokémon. Although The Pokemon Company does not explicitly mention Palworld, it is clear that this statement is a response to the massive success of the survival game (selling 8 million copies in less than six days!) and the allegations that many of the characters featured in Palworld are too similar to existing Pokémon.

Palworld, created by Pocketpair, has been designed as a game akin to Ark Survival Evolved or Vanaheim rather than the original Pokémon. However, the creators have been receiving death threats since the game’s release on January 19th.

In an interview with Automaton, CEO of Pocketpair, Takuro Mizobe, stated that the team conducted thorough legal analyses, and no claims of copyright infringement have been filed against the company.

“Our team takes game development very seriously and has no intention of infringing on the intellectual property rights of other companies,” Mizobe said.

The Pokemon Company has already taken action against modders who turned Palworld characters into Pokémon. Nexus Mods even announced that it will not host Pokemon mods for Palworld due to concerns of legal actions from Nintendo.

Despite these challenges, it is undeniable that Palworld has achieved tremendous success. Ignoring the controversies, IGN described the game as “fantastic” in its current state.

“While still in early access, Palworld is incredibly fun, has a surprising amount of content, deep survival mechanics, and is incredibly difficult to put down,” wrote Travis Northup of IGN in his Palworld review. “It’s hard to ignore how shamelessly the game borrows ideas and designs from Pokémon. Unfortunately, there are also some predictable bugs and performance issues, and the base’s resource replenishment system needs improvement. But when you’re riding a flying dragon and shooting a blue duck with a rifle, most of these flaws completely disappear.”

Palworld has already become one of my favorite survival games, and I can’t wait to see how it further evolves.
