Fortnite Returns to iOS in Europe After Four Years

Fortnite, the popular online multiplayer game developed by Epic Games, is set to make a comeback on iOS devices in Europe. This decision comes as a result of the need to open the iOS system to sideloaded applications and external stores, in accordance with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) that have been imposed on Apple. Cupertino-based company has until March 7 to make changes to its App Store that comply with the regulations. According to reports, Apple is already working on a version of the App Store tailored to the needs of European users. Epic Games may be one of the many available app stores in the region, finally allowing iPhone users to play Fortnite after four long years of waiting.

In an announcement made on the official Epic Games Store account, it was revealed that Fortnite will return to iOS in Europe this year. The game will be accessible through the Epic Games Store for iOS, although an exact release date was not disclosed.

In a separate post, the company stated, “Stay tuned to learn more about the regulatory schedule. We will continue to persuade courts and regulatory bodies that Apple is breaking the law.”

Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, also criticized Apple’s approach to the DMA regulations, referring to it as “malicious compliance.” In a lengthy post, he expressed his opinion on how the Cupertino tech giant forces external stores to accept “fees for nothing” and new Apple taxes for payments they do not process.

Furthermore, Sweeney argued that a monopolistic entity should not have the power to determine which companies it can compete with, following a list of requirements that Apple imposes on external stores before allowing them on iOS.

Fortnite was removed from the App Store in 2020 after Apple banned Epic Games for encouraging users to make payments independent of the App Store. In response, Epic Games filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple. Last week, the United States Supreme Court rejected the request to review the dispute, marking a victory for the tech giant.

Epic Games is concerned that Apple may once again ban Fortnite due to the historical conflicts between the two companies. With Apple still maintaining control over external applications, there is still a risk of a ban for Fortnite creators.
