The Return of Ed Cooley: A Fresh Perspective on the Betrayal in Providence College

The recent announcement of Ed Cooley, the former basketball coach at Providence College, returning as the coach of the Georgetown Hoyas has left students at Providence College feeling betrayed and abandoned. Cooley’s return to coach against the Friars, now led by coach Kim English, has stirred mixed emotions among fans. It has become a personal matter for many, rather than just a game.

“We feel betrayed,” says Justice Avant, a senior student at Providence College. “We feel abandoned. This is personal to us.”

The walls of McPhail’s bar in the Slavin Center at Providence College are adorned with collages featuring past basketball team covers, with pink sticky notes underneath bearing the face of former coach Ed Cooley. These sticky notes symbolize the sense of betrayal that many students feel towards Cooley.

Patrick Cambria, a student from New York, says that when Cooley left, everyone felt wronged. “He stirred our emotions, but suddenly it all became just business,” says Cambria.

Whether they were longtime fans like Caroline Austin’s father, a 1989 graduate of Providence College, or Shannon Kelly and Meghan Barker, who initially hesitated to buy tickets to the game but eventually decided to do so because they love the atmosphere at Amica Mutual Pavilion (AMP), everyone felt betrayed and abandoned.

However, not everyone sees Cooley’s return as a tragedy. Jack Brodin, a Providence College student, says he doesn’t have the same strong emotions as his older peers. To him, focusing on Cooley seems like a waste when they already have a young and charismatic coach in Kim English. According to Brodin, the team, the college, and the community are gaining new energy with English.

Now, with new talented players on board, English may even lead the Friars to several appearances in the Sweet Sixteen, adds Brodin.

Despite the feelings of betrayal and anger, Providence College students eagerly await the game, hoping it will help ease the tense atmosphere. It could be an opportunity to immerse themselves in a boiling cauldron of emotions and see if love can overcome betrayal.
