New Leader at Blizzard: Johanna Faries Takes the Helm

Johanna Faries zostaje nową szefową Blizzarda

After the recent departure of Mike Ybarra from Blizzard, the company has found a new leader. Johanna Faries, the former General Manager of Call of Duty, has been promoted to oversee everything related to Diablo 4, World of Warcraft, and more.

Ybarra had been serving as the president since 2021, overseeing the development of hit games like Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. However, after Microsoft acquired Blizzard in October of last year in a massive $68 billion deal, changes were inevitable. The company experienced a seismic shift from top to bottom, and Ybarra resigned from his position on Thursday, January 25th.

Now, Johanna Faries takes on the immense responsibility of leading the game studio behind some of the greatest PC games of all time. Faries joined Activision in 2018 as the head of Call of Duty esports before being promoted to General Manager in August 2021.

In her statement on Twitter, Faries wrote, “I join Blizzard with humility and admiration for everything this company has surprised the world with over the past three decades. Today brings a mixed bag of emotions, as the loss of talented colleagues from recent days is difficult to reconcile with the tremendous excitement I feel for joining Blizzard and continuing the momentum you’ve created for the next chapter in the company’s history.”

Discussing her future goals, Faries added, “I am committed to doing everything in my power to make Blizzard thrive, with care and respect for all of you and our games, each of which is unique and special. I am optimistic about our ability to serve current and future gaming communities and to strengthen our shared passion for excellence, polish, and creative mastery, which is a hallmark of Blizzard’s approach to game development.”

Following Faries’ departure, a significant gap was left, and Matt Cox has been appointed as the new Vice President and General Manager of Call of Duty. Cox previously worked on titles like Guitar Hero, Skylanders, Destiny, and Call of Duty, and most recently held the position of Vice President of Product in the Call of Duty franchise.
