Providence College Students’ Behavior Sparks Discourse on Sportsmanship and Campus Culture
In recent days, the actions of Providence College students during a basketball game against Georgetown have generated significant controversy and discussion. While the PC Friars claimed victory in the game, it was the behavior of some students that stole the spotlight, prompting questions about sportsmanship and the values of the institution.
Social media platforms were flooded with videos depicting a chaotic scene with students trampling each other in their exuberance. The images were alarming, and it became apparent that the conduct displayed by these students did not align with the principles and ideals upheld by the college.
This incident was an outcome of the departure of former coach Ed Cooley, who left Friartown for Georgetown last year. While changes in coaching staff are not unusual in the world of college sports, the reaction of the students to Cooley’s return to the AMP was widely regarded as inappropriate.

While an apology from Coach English, the Athletic Director, or a student organization would be a step in the right direction, it is crucial for President Reverend Kenneth Sicard, O.P., to publicly address the issue. This act would send a clear message that such behavior is not tolerated and ensure that this regrettable incident does not overshadow an otherwise successful Friar season.
As an ardent supporter of Providence College Friars for over six decades, I have witnessed the team’s dedication to integrity and sportsmanship. It is disheartening to see such behavior from the current generation of students. I hope that they recognize the gravity of their actions, and I implore Providence College to swiftly take action in addressing this issue and reaffirming the cherished values that lie at the core of the institution.
