Sony Invests in African Mobile Publisher Carry1st

Sony inwestuje w afrykańskiego wydawcę mobilnego – Carry1st

Sony has made an undisclosed strategic investment in African mobile publisher Carry1st. The Japanese company made the investment through the Sony Innovation Fund, based on information provided by CNBC. Carry1st is based in Cape Town, South Africa, and raised $27 million last year for the development and licensing of new titles.

Carry1st has worked on projects such as Mine Rescue, Spongebob Squarepants: Krusty Cook-Off, and Ludo Blitz. The company has also partnered with Riot Games to launch local servers for the game Valorant, and with Activision Blizzard to bring Call of Duty: Mobile to the region.

According to Cordel Robbin-Coker, co-founder and CEO of Carry1st, the partnership with Sony is still in an “exploratory” stage, but he hopes that PlayStation will believe in the idea that Africa will become the next big video game market.

Many people in Africa still buy consoles from grey market sellers, which means Sony has the opportunity to eliminate intermediaries and establish a presence in this market.

Robbin-Coker stated, “We hope to be able to help Sony expand the reach of PlayStation in the region and support them in various ways, including market strategies and digital payments.”

Carry1st plans to release its first game from its own studio in 2024, and Robbin-Coker is confident that the studio will achieve this goal.
