Virtual reality (VR) technology is revolutionizing the field of Kinesiology, providing new opportunities for learning and rehabilitation. Rhonda Boyd, an instructor in the Department of Kinesiology, is using VR studies to enhance her students’ understanding of the subject.

Boyd collaborated with Patrick Olivo, the CEO of Virtualis, a French company dedicated to harnessing the full potential of virtual reality in rehabilitation and health. Virtualis has developed cutting-edge VR goggles that simulate different scenarios, helping patients improve their balance and physical posture. By integrating VR into rehabilitation, Virtualis aims to achieve advanced results and assist patients in their recovery process from orthopedic, neurological, or cervical injuries.

Dr. Jerry Yarborough, founder of Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers in Ruston, was the first in the USA to adopt the Virtualis system and remains the sole provider in Louisiana. As an alumnus of Louisiana Tech University, Yarborough eagerly supports students in the region, helping them pursue their educational goals. In 2022, Boyd’s class started participating in personalized demonstrations to get a firsthand experience of VR.

Virtual reality technology has numerous applications in the field of kinesiology. Clients can focus on normal movements in an enjoyable virtual environment, using VR to improve joint range of motion, muscle and nervous system control, vestibular rehabilitation, posture, and cognitive function.

Aislinn Cobb, a third-year Kinesiology student, expressed her excitement about participating in simulations that brought vestibular and proprioceptive experiences to life. Wearing VR goggles and standing on a balance board, Cobb could feel the virtual sensations of being on a roller coaster, providing a unique perspective that goes beyond classroom learning.

The collaboration between Boyd’s class and Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers offers students valuable insights into the patient’s perspective and the resources available to assist them. Students witness firsthand how tests are conducted and learn how to address issues such as balance, motion sickness, and fear of heights. This immersive experience is truly remarkable.
