The Immersive Arts project, led by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), is set to revolutionize the creative potential of immersive technologies. With a groundbreaking grant of £6 million, the project aims to support British artists and organizations in harnessing the creative power offered by immersive technologies.

Immersive Arts, also known as IA, will provide grants totaling £3.6 million to over 200 artists and organizations working with immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR). This funding will allow artists to explore the limitless possibilities of these cutting-edge technologies and push the boundaries of their artistic expression.

Funded by the XRtists program, a collaborative initiative between the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, and Arts Council of Wales, Immersive Arts aims to empower artists and organizations by offering training, mentorship, specialized resources, and financial support.

“This program will enhance the skills and infrastructure related to immersive technology, maximizing the potential of our vibrant creative industries and increasing their value to £50 billion by 2030,” said Lucy Fraser, Secretary of Culture.

The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) will lead the program, with its main center situated in the Pervasive Media Studio in Bristol. Four other major partners in Glasgow, Belfast, Derry, and Cardiff will closely collaborate with artists in their respective regions, fostering a nationwide exploration of immersive arts.

In addition to these partners, the project has also joined forces with Unlimited, an organization dedicated to working with disabled artists and audiences to challenge perceptions of disability in the cultural sector, as well as Immerse UK, a membership organization devoted to driving the advancement of immersive technologies.

With its ambitious three-year duration, the Immersive Arts project will undoubtedly shape the future of the arts by leveraging the transformative potential of immersive technologies. Artists and organizations across the UK will have the opportunity to pioneer innovative and boundary-pushing creations, solidifying the UK’s position as a global leader in the immersive arts scene.
