Damage to Railway Tracks between Lahti and Kouvola: Repair and Consequences

Uszkodzenie torów kolejowych między Lahti a Kouvola: Naprawa i konsekwencje

According to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, damages were detected on the section between Lahti and Kouvola. These damages are usually caused by wheel slippage on the tracks.

The state-owned railway company informed that the damaged section of tracks has been repaired and long-distance services will be restored after the completion of rolling stock inspections. It is important to note that the damaged tracks significantly affected the company’s fleet, as over 70% of the trains operated on this section.

On Thursday, the company was able to provide about 80% of its regular long-distance services. VR announced yesterday that they expect almost normal operation of their trains on Friday, with minor sporadic exceptions.

“We expect a comprehensive report on the entire unusual chain of events,” stated the Minister of Transportation and Communications, Lulu Ranne (Law and Justice Party), on Wednesday.

Although the Ministry of Transportation and Communications received a report on the track damage from the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, they want to further investigate the causes of service disruptions in collaboration with the government’s property management department.

“How did the damage occur? Why was it so extensive? How did it truly impact safety? And why did it cause such significant disruptions to railway transport? It is necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future. Passengers need to have confidence that railway transport is functioning and safe,” Ranne emphasized.
