A New Nightmare: Dying Light 2 Introduces Terrifying Difficulty Mode

Dying Light 2: Now Even Scarier with Nightmare Difficulty

When night falls in Dying Light 2, the game transforms into a realm of terror, with the most horrifying foes emerging to hunt down players, initiating intense pursuits that force them to flee across rooftops in search of safety. However, for those who found the gameplay too easy, a new nightmare difficulty mode is on the horizon, promising a complete overhaul of the gaming experience.

In a recent post on the Steam page for the game, Tymon Smektala, the director of the Dying Light 2 series, delves into the changes brought about by the nightmare difficulty mode. This mode doesn’t simply add more enemies or increase their health; it introduces new, altered mechanics that demand a more tactical and calculated approach from players.

In order to further immerse players in the terrifying world of the game, the nightmare mode strips away most of the HUD elements, as Smektala explains, “To spot an enemy, you’ll have to rely on your eyes and ears, rather than checking indicators on the interface.”

It’s evident that removing HUD indicators for dangerous enemies will make Dying Light 2 a significantly scarier game. One aspect of the game that has often been more irritating than enjoyable is the so-called Howlers, nocturnal creatures that emit blood-curdling screams as they launch attacks on players and others nearby. While they are generally easy to spot, they always have a special icon hovering above their position, diminishing the element of surprise and threat – one can simply avoid those areas.

Collaborative play (co-op) will also operate somewhat differently in the nightmare difficulty mode. “Usually, playing in co-op mode makes the game easier, but here it’s quite the opposite – battles are tough,” explains Jan Rajtar-Kruczyński, a game designer. “The idea is that through good teamwork and communication, you’ll be able to defeat even the toughest enemies.”

Therefore, we can expect significantly tougher enemies, especially when it comes to the infected and light-sensitive foes. And as for the flashlight that we have relied on? Yes, it will now flicker and tremble, adding to the chilling atmosphere.

The creators assert that the changes introduced with the nightmare difficulty mode are too numerous to list exhaustively, so players will need to carefully observe when they are implemented. Fortunately, the wait won’t be long – Smektala states that the update can be expected “in just a few days.”
