In an innovative initiative that combines education and technology, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s School of Nursing presents a groundbreaking virtual visit. The Nursing 360 project immerses future nurses in an internationally recognized Simulation Innovation Center located within the Nursing Department. The aim of this initiative is to prepare the next generation of nurses for their academic journey.
Nursing 360 is a collaboration between the nursing department and the Center for Visualization and Extended Reality. This immersive visualization welcomes and acquaints future nursing students with the dynamic world of studies and laboratories. It provides them with a preview of their learning environment and offers virtual backstage access to the state-of-the-art simulation center, where their practical experiences come to life.
This initiative plays a crucial role in the success of future nursing students, according to Dr. Sloan Davidson, Director of the UA Little Rock School of Nursing. She emphasizes the importance of familiarizing first-year students with the high technological standards and simulation lab aspects, believing that early exposure will reduce their anxiety and better prepare them for their coursework.
The Nursing 360 project is a shining example of interdisciplinary collaboration, offering valuable experiences to students from both fields. Over 20 individuals, including teachers, students, staff, and alumni of UA Little Rock, were involved in the creation process.
“This is a wonderful example of interdisciplinary collaboration, providing our students with valuable hands-on experience,” said Thomas Coffin, Operations Manager at the Center for Visualization. “It teaches project management and application development skills that will benefit them in their future careers.”
The Nursing 360 website was designed and developed by Carlos Ochoa, an informatics student from Thousand Oaks, California. Ochoa remarked on the opportunity to work with other departments at the university, highlighting the intriguing aspects of the project. He honed his graphic design and web development skills while adapting to the project’s needs and priorities. Through teamwork and effective communication, he also acquired vital collaboration skills that will undoubtedly serve him well in the future.
Joanna Hall, the Director of Simulation, emphasizes that the virtual visit is an excellent way to generate interest in the medical simulation capabilities offered at the Simulation Innovation Center. Hall stated that they organize numerous visits every year, not only for prospective students but also for individuals interested in their simulation lab. The Center for Visualization proved to be an excellent partner, dynamically developing innovative technologies. Hall looks forward to more opportunities for collaboration in the future.
