Hong Kong’s Hydrogen Revolution: A Blueprint for Future Cities?

Hong Kong is emerging as a leader in the adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source, positioning itself as a model for other cities to follow. With a strong commitment to decarbonization, the city’s strategic vision includes the deployment of hydrogen-powered infrastructure across multiple sectors. One of the most significant projects is the L12 power plant, developed by HK Electric, which will use hydrogen to reach an impressive efficiency rate of 58%. The facility is expected to set new benchmarks in reducing carbon emissions for large-scale power generation.

In addition to this, Hong Kong has initiated nine hydrogen trial projects aimed at testing the feasibility of this green fuel in different contexts. These projects span diverse sectors, including electricity production, transportation, and heavy industry, demonstrating the city’s ambition to integrate hydrogen into the fabric of its urban energy system. These trials serve as critical stepping stones in Hong Kong’s journey toward its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035.
