Is Microsoft Considering Releasing Gears of War Series on PlayStation?

In recent weeks, there have been growing speculations about whether Microsoft is planning to release Starfield game on the PS5. Now it seems that Xbox Games Studios may also be considering releasing the Gears of War series on the PlayStation. These details emerged from Jeff Grubb’s comments during a recent episode of his program, Giant Bomb livestream.

While specific information about the Sony platform for the Gears of War release has not been disclosed, considering that the PS5 is the only current generation console from Sony, it is likely to be the targeted machine. Microsoft has not officially commented on this matter, so at this point, everything is still speculation.

It is also unclear which specific games from the Gears of War series could make their way to PlayStation. The latest installment, Gears 5, is the most likely candidate for a port to the PS5. However, if Microsoft decides to give one of its flagship IPs to its rival, it is possible that a 4K Gears of War collection could be released, including not only Gears 5 but also the first three games in the series and Gears of War 4 on Xbox One.

The arrival of Gears 5 on the PS5 may not be as significant as the possibility of releasing Starfield on Sony’s console. There are already better third-person shooters available on PlayStation, such as the excellent Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves collection. Nevertheless, if such a port were to materialize, it would confirm rumors about Microsoft’s intentions to become a third-party console producer. This, in turn, could pave the way for the arrival of Halo Infinite and The Master Chief Collection on other platforms, such as the PS5 or the rumored Nintendo Switch 2.

It is evident that Xbox game ports to PlayStation may not come to fruition. It would pose a threat to the future of the already poorly performing Xbox Series X console. It may be more likely for Microsoft to limit itself to releasing the Game Pass service on the PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Microsoft’s subscription has been available on Windows computers and smartphones for years, so the next step in its development could be its presence on competing consoles.

Currently, it is unknown whether these exciting rumors about the company’s expansion as a game publisher for other manufacturers are true. They may please PlayStation fans but could simultaneously disappoint longstanding Xbox fans.
