New Technologies Transforming Boxing Training

Nowe technologie zmieniają trening bokserów

In a world where video game consoles are a common sight, Melissa Drywater saw something different when her son put on a virtual reality (VR) headset – the potential for training in a whole new way. Drywater, who runs a boxing gym in Tahlequah, started utilizing VR headsets for training when her son got one. Soon, three other boxers from Drywater’s gym also had the headsets and were able to train using the technology. This new technology is completely changing the way boxers can train.

“Before, when the weather was cold, we couldn’t train outdoors,” Drywater said. “So, I told everyone to bring their headsets and everyone could get their cardio workout in at the gym. It’s better than just shadowboxing, it can get boring, but with this technology, you can compete against someone. It’s something extraordinary and fun.” Boxers can progress and face tougher opponents as they advance through levels.

“You can level up and move to the next stages, so you’re fighting against more experienced and stronger boxers as you develop yourself, facing challenges like in real life. It gives you the chance to go up against someone who’s better than you,” Drywater explained.

Recently, Drywater and her group of young boxers participated in the VR Golden Gloves event. It’s an officially recognized event where Drywater’s boxers had the opportunity to compete against strong competition. Drywater’s boxers achieved success, taking first, second, and third places. Michael Drywater emerged as the champion, defeating Victor Durana.

“This is truly an incredible event, the first of its kind in history,” Drywater said. “I think it’s quite revolutionary because it replicates and simulates real boxing fights. They see their opponent right in front of them, really fighting. The game tracks and monitors correct boxing techniques, so to score points, you have to throw combinations and execute everything correctly.”

Drywater even had the chance to test out the technology herself and found it to be a solid training method.

“The kids brought their headsets, I tried one on, and it’s a good exercise, it gets your circulation going. It’s a lot of fun and a great form of training,” Drywater added.
