Utah is on the verge of a major educational revolution. In the autumn of 2025, the state will witness the launch of Virtual Horizons Charter School, a groundbreaking public school that will operate entirely in virtual reality. This innovative initiative, approved by the Utah State Charter School Board, will redefine the traditional classroom experience.
Virtual Horizons will provide enrolled students with a virtual reality headset, Chromebook, Wi-Fi, and other essential technologies, as outlined in the school’s application to the Utah State Charter School Board. The school will be open to students statewide, and as a public charter school, it will be tuition-free.
Unlike conventional or online schools, Virtual Horizons will transport students into a virtual world where they will create avatars to represent themselves and interact with the avatars of their peers and teachers. This immersive environment, explained Kristin Elinkowski, the board chair of Virtual Horizons and the Utah State Charter School Board, is designed to enhance the retention and assimilation of knowledge.
This virtual world will be far from a traditional school setting where students walk through hallways and sit in classrooms. Instead, when classes commence, students will find themselves exploring the depths of the ocean, visiting the Taj Mahal, or even traveling back in time to the Jurassic era.
Elinkowski believes that learning in virtual reality offers unique benefits. The 3D environment will be interactive and provide visual, auditory, and tactile experiences. Teachers, who can work remotely from anywhere in Utah, will undergo specialized training in virtual reality instruction.
Initially, the school plans to enroll approximately 350 students in grades 4-8, with gradual expansion to include grades 9-12 over the next five years, ultimately reaching a maximum capacity of 900 students.
While Virtual Horizons is not the first school to explore virtual reality, it may become one of the first K-12 schools in the country to fully implement this immersive technology. Similar to the existing Optima Academy Online in Florida, Virtual Horizons aims to combine online learning with virtual reality.
As part of its curriculum, Virtual Horizons plans to incorporate Optima Domi—an offering from Optima Academy—which focuses on phonetics, grammar, intensive writing, Singapore math, and classical literature studies.
In 2022, Virtual Horizons conducted a survey among 483 families in Salt Lake City. The results revealed that 93% of the families supported the introduction of a virtual reality-based school, with 73% preferring it over traditional teaching methods.
The school will begin accepting student applications in the winter, though technological advancements and other transformations may unfold by 2025. Kristin Elinkowski remarks, “That’s what’s exciting about virtual reality—it’s a rapidly evolving field. Headsets and software will only get better, and everything will continue to improve.”
