Nintendo Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

20 lat temu historia zmieniła się na zawsze

Exactly 20 years ago, on January 29, 2004, history was forever changed. Well, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but on that day, Nintendo released Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, which was a significant milestone in gaming history. Regardless, there’s a good chance that one of these two games (or maybe even both, if you’re a completist) helped define a stage of your life, making this anniversary worth celebrating, especially since FireRed and LeafGreen sparked the best trend in the Pokémon franchise.

Of course, we’re referring to the occasional re-releases of older Pokémon games by Nintendo to adapt them to the latest generation and technological capabilities. It all started back in 2004 when the first-generation Pokémon games, Red and Blue (Red and Green in Japan), were revamped by Game Freak, adding colors, smoother graphics and animations, and a significant amount of new content. Most importantly, these remakes allowed players to revisit the Kanto region and its Pokémon on a contemporary console – the Game Boy Advance. It was a huge achievement.

Since then, Nintendo has given the same special treatment to the most successful Pokémon games, including Gold and Silver, Ruby and Sapphire, and Diamond and Pearl. For Pokémon fans, this is a triumphant moment that allows us to revisit beloved games and relive those adventures with the latest technology. After all, as time goes on, it becomes increasingly difficult to play these games in their original form. Who still has a functioning Game Boy Advance or DS? The remakes bring these nostalgic games back to life.

It’s no wonder that fans are constantly speculating about new remakes of earlier Pokémon games. It’s also frustrating that so few Pokémon games from the franchise’s history are available on the Nintendo Switch, especially Black and White and X and Y. With Nintendo’s preparations for unveiling the Switch 2, perhaps the company will fulfill our dreams and announce that they will remake all previous Pokémon games to be compatible with the new console. However, it must be said clearly that this will never happen. But it would be an absolute blessing, wouldn’t it?
