Palworld: A Global Success Story in the Gaming World

In just one week since its early access release on the Steam platform, Palworld, an open-world survival crafting game with monster collection mechanics, has sold over 8 million copies. It has also reached the milestone of two million concurrent players on Valve’s platform, a feat previously achieved only by PUBG: Battlegrounds during the peak of the Battle Royale game craze. Despite the million-player gap between the two games, it would be absurd to underestimate Palworld’s achievements at this point.

While there are not yet many official data available regarding the Xbox version of the game, Simon Carless from GameDiscoverCo estimates that it has been downloaded at least 1.5 million times. Mat Piscatella from Circana tweeted that Palworld surpassed Fortnite in daily active usage on Xbox last Monday, with an average playtime of over 200 minutes.

The remarkable global success of Pocketpair’s game has not gone unnoticed by The Pokémon Company. After blocking modifications that introduced actual Pokémon into Palworld, the company issued a statement announcing an “investigation” into the game.

We have received numerous inquiries about a game released by another company in January 2024. We did not grant permission to use Pokémon intellectual property or resources in this game. We intend to conduct further investigations and take appropriate steps to combat any infringement of Pokémon’s intellectual property rights. We will continue to nurture and develop every individual Pokémon and its world, working towards unifying the world through Pokémon in the future.

Many have commented on the difficulties of pursuing legal action in such cases. We will see if The Pokémon Company decides to take action. In the meantime, Pocketpair has published a publishing plan for upcoming Palworld updates.
