Palworld: A Unique Monster Collecting Game

PocketPair, the developer of the highly anticipated game Palworld, vehemently denies any infringement on the intellectual property rights of the popular monster franchise, Pokémon. In an interview with Automaton, Takuro Mizobe, the head of PocketPair, assured that the game has undergone legal scrutiny and no legal action has been taken against it.

The development team at PocketPair is dedicated to creating games without violating the intellectual property rights of other companies. Mizobe emphasized this commitment, stating, “We approach our game development with great care and have absolutely no intention to infringe on the intellectual property rights of other companies.”

Addressing the similarities between Palworld and Pokémon, Mizobe referred to Pokémon as the “overwhelming leader in the monster collecting and breeding genre” and acknowledged its status as a “remarkable predecessor” to Palworld.

These statements arose amidst a weekend of discussions on social media where Pokémon fans noted similarities between the creatures in Palworld and the popular Pokémon franchise. At one point, the term “rip-off” trended in Japan. Mizobe, in response to this, acknowledged receiving “derogatory comments” and “death threats” directed towards the artists working on the game.

“We are currently facing baseless accusations and witnessing tweets that appear to be death threats towards our artists,” Mizobe shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I have received various opinions about Palworld, but all of the productions related to Palworld are overseen by many individuals, including myself, and I am responsible for the production. Please refrain from making false accusations against the artists working on Palworld.”

Concerns have been raised regarding the potential use of 3D models from Nintendo Switch games, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, as references for the Palworld creatures. Eurogamer reached out to PocketPair, Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company for comments regarding these allegations.

Despite the controversies, Palworld has experienced tremendous success, breaking records on Steam by selling over 5 million copies in just three days. Additionally, an increasing number of players are enjoying the game through Xbox Game Pass.
