Palworld, the popular survival and crafting game dubbed as “Pokémon with weapons,” recently received an update from its developers, Pocketpair. The update aimed to address certain issues faced by players on Xbox and Windows PC. While the game was released in early access on Steam, Xbox, and Windows PC on January 19, the Xbox version falls short in terms of features compared to its Steam counterpart.

Dedicated servers play a crucial role in enhancing the multiplayer experience in Palworld. Players on Steam can create and join dedicated servers, allowing up to 32 players to collaborate in the same world and form guilds together. However, Xbox and Windows PC players, including those using Game Pass, are unable to create or join dedicated servers, limiting the online co-op mode to only 2-4 players. Additionally, there is no multiplayer compatibility between Xbox and Steam.

The Xbox players of Palworld feel like they are playing an older version of the game as they miss out on certain features. Pocketpair, however, denies this claim and states that both versions will always be different until cross-platform multiplayer is enabled. The disparity between the Xbox and Steam versions stems from the certification process required by Microsoft, which Steam doesn’t have to undergo.

Although Pocketpair did not provide a detailed explanation as to why Palworld on Xbox and Windows PC lacks dedicated servers, a representative mentioned that negotiations were challenging and indicated that it was beyond their control. They added, “But… we are trying!”

Here are the patch notes for Palworld on Xbox:

  • [Fixed Features in this Update]
    • When launching the application, the screen turns black, and the game cannot be resumed.
    • Controller is not recognized.
    • Button prompt display is incorrect.
    • Quit game button is not implemented.

The exact meaning behind Pocketpair’s statement, “it is beyond our control,” regarding the addition of dedicated servers on Xbox remains unclear, especially considering that other games have dedicated servers on the platform. IGN reached out to Pocketpair for clarification but has not received a response yet.

Palworld has gained significant success and attention but has not been without controversy. Pocketpair received death threats due to allegations of “copying” Pokémon, leading to Nintendo swiftly removing mods related to those creatures. The game’s server issues have also arisen due to its overwhelming popularity.
