Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC: Exploring the Untapped Potential of Carmine

Carmine w grze Pokemon Scarlet i Violet potrzebuje więcej uwagi

While playing the DLC Hidden Treasure of Area Zero in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, players are introduced to Carmine, one of the new characters. She plays a role in both The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk, but her significance often diminishes to that of a secondary antagonist. However, there is potential for Carmine to have a more substantial role.

Carmine is Kieran’s older sister and a student at Blueberry Academy. Hailing from Mossui Town in Kitakami, players first encounter her in The Teal Mask. Initially, she seems like an important character and acts as the player’s first opponent in battle.

As the storyline progresses in The Teal Mask, though, Carmine takes a backseat to her brother. The same occurs in The Indigo Disk, where she is reduced to a supporting character until the journey to Area Zero. While she finally plays a significant role there, her appearances are relatively short due to the brevity of that part of the game.

I must say that Carmine’s role pales in comparison to her brother’s, despite her promising beginning in the game. Her battles are also some of the easiest in the game. Furthermore, it feels like we don’t truly understand her as a character, unlike Kieran. What are her motivations and goals in life? She deserved more opportunities to be further developed in these storylines, perhaps with additional dialogue or additional moments in the expanded adventures of the DLC.

Initially, Carmine appears to be a typical schoolyard bully-like character that the player must face, similar to a rival. However, she quickly takes a backseat to Kieran. Despite her strong personality, she lacks any real threat or impressiveness. Shallow characterization and writing for her would be fine if we had more material surrounding Carmine to discover. Unfortunately, it seems that is not the case. It feels like a lack of character development for someone who seemed important, whether it be as an original hero with an important task to fulfill or as a supporting antagonist aiding Kieran’s development.

Considering the epilogue of Mochi Mayhem, it appears that Game Freak has nearly completed these Generation 9 games. It seems unlikely that we will get a redemption arc for Carmine in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. There is a chance for possible future remakes of the Unova region, but will she be in those games? It seems doubtful. However, including her as an optional secret boss could give her a chance to shine, which she somewhat lacked. Unfortunately, I am not sure if this will happen, but I would love to see more of her in future Pokemon productions.
