Promoting Self-Identity in the Virtual World: Embracing Diversity and Authenticity

Rozpoznanie własnej tożsamości w świecie wirtualnym

In the past, I often created characters with fair skin and a look resembling Barbie. I chose characters that were fully accessible and popular, but they reflected an idealized beauty “on a white model.” Regardless of claims that I did not want to be white in reality, I still chose white avatars in my video games. In reality, I was proud of my black heritage, but in the virtual world, I prioritized societal validation over my own sense of identity.

Perhaps my choices were influenced by how black characters were perceived in the media. I long believed that blackness was seen as something “abnormal,” “ugly,” and “criminal.” It wasn’t until I reached adulthood that I realized the importance of embracing my own identity and accepting my blackness.

Over time and with social changes, I consciously started creating characters that more accurately reflected my identity. An example of this is Salem Farrow – my first black Sim. I dedicated many days to crafting her impressive appearance, with beautiful brown skin and wild curls. Creating her allowed me to confront and overcome internalized beliefs about beauty ideals. I awakened to the power of choosing to be myself, even in the virtual world.

Many of us have similar experiences. We may not realize how media and video games influence our perception of ourselves and our identity. It is crucial to be aware of the impact they have on our choices and to start creating characters that truly reflect our identity and the beauty of our diversity.

The environment in which we develop has a tremendous influence on our self-acceptance. That’s why it is essential for us to advocate for diversity and representation in the media, enabling everyone to see themselves as heroes. This can serve as inspiration for discovering and accepting our own identity, regardless of the dominant beauty standards imposed upon us.

In conclusion, I encourage conscious character creation in video games that reflects our identity and promotes the beauty of diversity. Let us remember that the virtual world can also bring joy and fulfillment if we allow ourselves to be authentic.
