Florida A&M University (FAMU) is leading a virtual revolution with the introduction of their very own virtual space called Rattlerverse. This innovative virtual world allows the public to experience a dose of the future by immersing themselves in the FAMU campus and culture.

Rattlerverse is the first virtual space of its kind for an African American college or university. It operates on the Meta Horizon Worlds platform, which utilizes cutting-edge three-dimensional displays. Within the animated reality of Rattlerverse, users can engage in a variety of attractions, from virtual soccer games at Ken Riley Field to taking on the role of the section leader in the Marching “100” percussion section, and even stepping onto the stage of the Willa Packer Amphitheater.

To access Rattlerverse, all you need is a virtual reality headset such as the Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest Pro. The creators, including FAMU alumna L. Michelle Salvant and her company LMichelleMedia, have assisted the university in developing this virtual world.

Rattlerverse is the result of two years of work and an investment of approximately $20,000. It is also an extension of FAMU’s initiative to offer virtual campus tours, which was launched in 2018 and aims to provide a 360-degree perspective of the campus to all interested individuals.

William E. Hudson Jr., the Vice President for Student Affairs at FAMU, commented on the project, stating, “As the world’s premier historically African American college, we are always seeking new ways to reach our audience. We take pride in our innovation and our commitment to the new generation of students.”

While FAMU is the first African American college to introduce a virtual world through the Meta Horizon Worlds platform, Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, pioneered the use of metaverses as interactive virtual educational spaces for their students back in 2021.

Rattlerverse is only the beginning, as FAMU is also testing its own virtual experience for students called Metaversity, offering lessons in virtual reality.

To enter Rattlerverse, simply download the Meta Horizon Worlds app on your Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest Pro headset, search for “Rattlerverse” within the app, and choose the FAMU virtual world.

Now, everyone has the opportunity to discover the beauty of FAMU and experience the culture of this unique institution in the virtual world.
