After a successful 18-year legal career, Sims transitioned to academia. In 2000, she joined South Georgia State College as an assistant professor and later became an associate professor of political science with tenure at Georgia Highlands College in Rome, Georgia in 2008. Sims returned to South Georgia State College in 2015 and is currently a tenured professor in the Department of Social Sciences. Throughout her career, she has taught various courses including American government, comparative politics, international relations, and constitutional law. Sims has led student trips to Europe to study foreign politics, participated in a conference on federalism in Scotland prior to the United Kingdom’s referendum, and taken students to Washington, D.C. Her master’s thesis at Georgia State University in 2018 focused on international law and peace. Within her college, Sims served as the elected president of the South Georgia State College Faculty Assembly. She is admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of the United States and all federal and state courts in the state of Georgia. She is also a member of the State Bar of Georgia.
With her expertise in constitutional law, American government, and international relations, Sims is a valuable source of knowledge for her students. She is passionate about educating and shaping the next generation of active citizens and lawyers. South Georgia State College, a state college of the University System of Georgia, offers associate degrees in 20 different programs. The college also has campuses in Douglas and Waycross, Georgia. Sims began her career as a judicial staff attorney in the Waycross Judicial Circuit in Douglas in 1982, shortly after obtaining her law degree. She later served as an assistant district attorney from 1983 to 1984, handling criminal and misdemeanor cases in superior courts and becoming the first woman to do so in the circuit. For the next 11 years, she maintained a private law practice as the sole proprietor of Rebecca L. Sims, Attorney at Law, in Douglas from 1985 to 1996, eventually becoming the solicitor of the State Court of Georgia, a role she was elected to for two four-year terms from 1989 to 1996. During her tenure, she moved the office to independence.
