Riot Games Implements New Strategy Amidst Challenging Times

Rozwódkiło przyjęciu nowej strategii

Amidst a rapidly changing landscape, Riot Games, the renowned gaming company, has announced its decision to undertake a new strategic approach. In an official letter to employees, CEO A. Dylan Jadeja highlighted the necessity for company-wide layoffs due to insufficient focus and an excessive number of simultaneous projects. As a result, Riot Games has experienced disappointing outcomes, leading to escalated costs and potential threats to the company.

Over the past few months, Riot Games has made several attempts to reevaluate its operations. Measures such as implementing hiring restrictions, cost control, and revenue growth strategies were put in place. Unfortunately, these efforts fell short of the desired outcomes. Consequently, Riot Games must redirect its focus towards areas that offer the greatest value to its players, the aspects truly worth their time.

Jadeja further explained the plans for the upcoming layoffs, which will be executed within the next few hours and gradually rolled out per local legal regulations. Displaced employees will receive a minimum of six months’ salary, monetary bonuses, and a range of additional benefits. Additionally, the company has requested all team members to reschedule meetings for the upcoming week and, if possible, work remotely, allowing time to adjust to this situation.

In addition to the layoffs, Riot Games has decided to discontinue its Riot Forge brand after the release of the game Bandle Tale. Established in December 2019 as an independent publishing brand, Riot Forge aimed to produce games developed by external studios using Riot Games’ own intellectual property (IP). However, Riot Games has determined that Riot Forge is no longer a key component of its future strategy.

Despite the restructuring, Jadeja emphasized that Riot Games’ commitment to producing ambitious games such as League of Legends, Valorant, Teamfight Tactics, and Wild Rift remains unwavering. The company’s development teams for these games will be given top priority. Furthermore, the game Legends of Runeterra will continue to be developed, albeit with a reduced team size, primarily focusing on the PvE (Player vs. Environment) mode – Path of Champions.

Riot Games’ layoffs add to the unfortunate trend of job losses already prevalent in the industry. Last year alone, an estimated 10,000 individuals lost their jobs across the gaming sector. The current year has witnessed a further 4,000 job cuts due to studio closures, project cancellations, and reduced funding. Regrettably, this distressing trend appears likely to continue in the months ahead.
