The Extraordinary Journey of Rogue Stargun: A Breakthrough VR Game for Quest Console

Rogue Stargun: Innowacyjna gra VR na konsolę Quest

Rogue Stargun, an innovative virtual reality game, is hitting the market this week thanks to Quest App Lab. Developed by DuGames, Rogue Stargun has been in the works since 2020 and is designed specifically for the Quest console. The game offers a solo campaign consisting of 24 missions, where players can pilot five unique spacecraft. Control is achieved through an interactive VR cockpit, allowing players to manipulate elements such as a joystick and targeting system.

Game creator Larry Du, in a conversation with UploadVR, revealed that the dream of creating his own game has been with him since childhood, inspired by titles like Tie Fighter and IL2-Sturmovik. The project began to take shape when he purchased the Quest console, primarily for Half-Life Alyx. However, Du was surprised by the limited number of VR games that offered a deeper level of immersion compared to Valve’s game. After considering developing the game for PC or mobile devices, Du built two prototypes—one for mobile devices and one for VR. He explained that the VR version was “more immersive and interesting.”

Working independently on the game, Du advises against tackling a Quest game as a first project. He reveals that he personally coded everything, wrote dialogues, and modeled the majority of the assets, all while working full-time. The game’s creators faced numerous challenges, including issues with Unity Engine’s Universal Rendering Pipeline (URP), whose initial version did not render the left eye view. Du also highlighted the difficulties in maintaining animation smoothness, especially on the original Quest console, where poor coding could lead to potential player discomfort. Summing up his experience, Du said, “Gradually, I learned to test only the features that required VR elements using a headset, and I tested things like AI outside the virtual world. The end result is impressive. At the end of the game, players will experience a space battle involving over 60 fighters and flagship vessels, all running at a speed of 72 fps!”

According to Du, Rogue Stargun distinguishes itself from other VR space combat simulators by striking the right balance between the interactivity of the cockpit and the combat itself. While games like Star Wars Squadrons or Space Salvage lean towards one side, Rogue Stargun requires players to effectively manage their engine and shield energy levels, extinguish cockpit fires, and collect power bonuses to enhance their spacecraft.

If Rogue Stargun gains a substantial fanbase, Du plans to introduce a multiplayer PvP mode. The creator is also considering incorporating gesture control using Apple Vision Pro technology, though he acknowledges that this solution may still be a few years away. Additionally, there are plans to adapt the game to different language markets and replace synthetic AI dialogues with real actors.

Rogue Stargun will be available on Quest App Lab starting from February 1st at a price of $10.99. The PC version is planned for release on Steam Early Access in March.
