The Pokemon Company Takes Action Against Palworld in Copyright Infringement Case

In a surprising turn of events, the Pokemon Company has officially released a statement regarding Palworld. The company has announced that it intends to investigate and minimize any intellectual property infringements related to Pokemon. Although the Pokemon Company does not explicitly reference Palworld, it is clear that this statement is a response to the game’s immense success (selling about 8 million copies in less than six days!) and the allegations of copyright infringement concerning the numerous characters featured in Palworld.

Created by Pocketpair, Palworld is designed as a game similar to Ark Survival Evolved or Vanaheim, rather than the original Pokemon. However, the creators have faced death threats since the game was released on January 19th.

In an interview with Automaton, Pocketpair’s CEO, Takuro Mizobe, stated that their team has undergone comprehensive legal scrutiny and there are no claims of copyright infringement against the company.

“Our team takes the game development process very seriously and has no intention of infringing on the intellectual property rights of other companies,” stated Mizobe.

The Pokemon Company has already taken action against modders who turned Palworld characters into Pokemon. Nexus Mods has also announced that it will not allow Pokemon mods for Palworld due to potential legal actions from Nintendo.

Despite these challenges, it cannot be argued that Palworld has achieved tremendous success. IGN described the game as “amazing” in its current state.

“Even though it is still in early access, Palworld is exceeding all expectations. With deep gameplay mechanics and an expansive world that is hard to ignore, it’s clear that the game draws inspiration and designs from Pokemon. Unfortunately, there were expected bugs and performance issues, as well as some shortcomings in the core breeding system. But when you’re riding a dragon-plane and aiming at a blue heron with a musket, most of these issues disappear,” wrote Travis Northcutt from IGN in his review of Palworld.

Palworld has quickly become one of my favorite games, and I am hopeful to see how it further develops.
