The Secrets of the Bahnsen Knights Sect

The Bahnsen Knights Sect is the third installment of the Pixel Pulp series developed by LCB Game Studio. This unique series combines pulp fiction motifs with paranormal elements to create extraordinary video games. While the previous parts told specific stories from previous years, Bahnsen Knights takes us back to 1986. The paranormal phenomena in each installment vary, but they are tied together by Lou Hill, a paranormal researcher and author, although he rarely takes center stage. This time, Agent Boulder is the main protagonist.

Agent Boulder infiltrates the Bahnsen Knights sect in search of a missing agent. The sect is led by Toni, who is known for his convincing speeches. As a former car salesman, he knows how to sell not only cars but also himself, which is essential for a cult leader. Cars play an important role in this organization, as all its members drive Ford Sierras.

Toni makes exaggerated claims that may seem absurd at first glance. For example, he claims that the devil was behind the creation of Dante’s Divine Comedy over 500 years ago. The other members of the sect are Keith, Luca, Vincent, and Monique, each contributing in their own way to the thrilling atmosphere, but Luca seems the most out of place. However, Toni remains the most terrifying, and Agent Boulder struggles to decipher him.

The sudden appearance of a tornado in the county becomes a serious problem. According to Toni, it is because hell is located above us, not beneath us. The Bahnsen Knights arrived just as the tornadoes began… Is it just a coincidence? This group performs exorcisms on the roads, not on people, which is something nobody expected. But you’ve embraced this creative idea in Pixel Pulp games.

As a secret agent, Boulder must maintain contact with his colleagues without getting caught. That’s why an intriguing plan has been devised. Agent Boulder communicates with his superior by leaving sacred cards next to evidence at a staged grave. The graves bear the names of his supposedly deceased wife and child, who are actually alive, but their alleged death serves as a good alibi for the agent’s dangerous activities. The evidence must be properly sorted into cards. One card is about knowledge of Toni, another is about accounting, and the third contains forged and illegally obtained documents. This task is not too difficult, and with each game run, the evidence comes from different sources.

Bahnsen Knights is primarily a “visual novel”. We spend a lot of time reading dialogues and making quick decisions. The game is made up of short episodes and should take no more than two or three hours to complete (probably closer to two if we don’t stop to take notes). Everything is done using a small text box at the bottom of the screen, even activities like playing cards or driving a car.

As for the appearance of the Pixel Pulp series games, they all have a similar retro look with a limited color palette, but each part has its own color combinations. Mothmen 1966 had a blue-green color scheme, Varney Lake had blue-yellow, and Bahnsen Knights, my favorite, has a red-purple combination. These colors make Bahnsen Knights exceptionally majestic, especially since the cult leader is somewhat of an iconic figure. All Pixel Pulp games look fantastic, but Bahnsen Knights definitely takes first place.
