Van Gogh Museum employees suspended for misconduct during Pokémon exhibition

Several employees of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam were suspended in December due to inappropriate behavior during the Pokémon exhibition, according to Dutch newspaper Parool.

The employees were allegedly providing potential visitors with secret information on how to acquire a limited number of tickets for the Pokémon exhibition. One employee was even suspected of appropriating a box of Pokémon cards that were produced specifically for the exhibition.

The collaborative Van Gogh Pokémon exhibition featured six Pokémon paintings in the famous style of the Dutch artist. Playing cards depicting Pikachu in the style of Van Gogh’s self-portraits were available for purchase at the museum. Originally intended to attract younger audiences, these cards instead caused unrest, leading to their discontinuation (despite initial plans to reintroduce them, the museum stated that the cards will no longer be available).

The identities of the suspended employees remain unknown, although one of them, as reported by Parool, had been working at the museum for 25 years.

Sources from Parool have requested anonymity as they are still employed at the museum. The Van Gogh Museum did not respond to ARTnews’ request for comment.

The exhibition concluded on January 7th.
