Uncovering Hidden Treasures in Minecraft: A Guide to Buried Treasures

Exploring the depths of Minecraft’s vast world can lead adventurers to discover hidden treasures and exciting surprises. One such treasure is the buried treasure, a naturally generated structure resembling a loot chest that can be found buried on beaches and sometimes in the depths of the ocean. The introduction of buried treasures in Minecraft’s 1.13 update, known as the Update Aquatic, brought new exploration possibilities for players.

Each buried treasure chest is a treasury of various items, but one thing that is always guaranteed to be found is the Heart of the Sea. This rare item is exclusive to buried treasures and is essential for crafting a conduit, an underwater structure similar to a lighthouse that grants players special powers.

Other items that can be found in buried treasure chests include iron swords, gold ingots, emeralds, diamonds, or prismarine crystals, just to name a few examples. Finding buried treasures can be a highly satisfying experience, but it also presents a challenge.

Finding Buried Treasures in Minecraft

Setting out to find buried treasures in Minecraft requires some knowledge and a necessary tool: treasure maps.

Treasure maps in Minecraft resemble stereotypical pirate maps and only show the basic terrain layout with the location of the buried treasure marked by a red X. There is also a white marker that indicates the player’s current position.

In both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition of Minecraft, treasure maps are guaranteed to be found in chests on shipwreck maps, which, as you may have guessed, are found in shipwrecks, and they also appear in small and large underwater ruins with around a 40% chance of discovery.

Look for a shipwreck in the ocean or on a beach (or on a snowy beach). Night vision potions can help with clear underwater visibility, or you can feed a friendly dolphin with raw cod or raw salmon, and it will lead you to the nearest shipwreck, buried treasure, or ocean ruins.

Note: The treasure map doesn’t always show a red X if there is no buried treasure at that location; it will turn into an ordinary map.

The Best Way to Find Buried Treasures in Minecraft

Once you have your map, it’s time to begin your search. The map will always indicate the nearest buried treasure relative to where the map was found. Two maps found in the same location may point to the same treasure. As you move around, the white marker will update your current position in relation to the treasure. The goal is to navigate toward the red X, keeping in mind that the terrain may not perfectly match the map.

The biggest challenge is that the “top” of the treasure map will always be north, regardless of the direction you’re facing in the game, which the map doesn’t indicate until you are within its area.

Fortunately, there are ways to determine your orientation and navigate effectively:

– In the Java Edition, bring up the debug screen by pressing the F3 key. This screen will display your current coordinates and direction (north, south, east, west). You can use it to align yourself with the map and find your way to the treasure.

– In the Bedrock Edition, display your block position by changing the world settings. Enable the “Show Coordinates” option in the game settings. The coordinates will appear in the top left corner of the screen.

Of course, you can always resort to remembering that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

Now, when you’re facing the right direction based on the X on your map, proceed to walk (or swim) until the white marker representing your current position gets close. You can start digging in the general area, but it may take some time as buried treasures are usually located about 40 blocks below ground level.

To save some time, align the top part of the white marker in line with the bottom edge of the X. Move forward until the white part of the marker is completely obscured by the X. Then, gently backtrack slightly until a few white pixels become visible. Dig straight down; the buried treasure chest you seek should be there!
