Western Digital, a leading data storage company, has joined the trend of portable, handheld PC solutions by introducing the WD Black SN770M NVMe SSD, specifically designed for portable gaming consoles.

The number of portable gaming consoles is steadily rising, with Valve kickstarting the trend with the creation of Steam Deck. Asus also joined this segment with the ROG Ally, one of the first devices of its kind officially released in Australia. This has sparked a race, resulting in the recent release of the Legion Go by Lenovo and the announcement of the MSI Claw model.

The new Western Digital storage unit provides up to 2TB of capacity, allowing portable gaming consoles to store larger and more expansive games, considering that some current titles exceed 150GB in size.

The WD Black SN770M is tailored for portable gaming consoles, taking into consideration their compact size. It features the compact M.2 2230 form factor, and notable features include support for PCIe Gen 4.03, nCache 4.0 technology from Western Digital, and compatibility with Microsoft’s DirectStorage. With transfer speeds reaching up to 5150 MB/s, this storage unit aims to enhance the capabilities of devices like the ROG Ally.

Productivity and compatibility with the ROG Ally and similar AMD-based devices were crucial factors in the development of the WD Black SN770M. Renato Fragale, Senior Director of Product Management at AMD, commented on the introduction of this storage unit, stating, “Our Ryzen Z1 Series processors are shaping the future of portable gaming. The latest WD Black SN770M NVMe SSDs will be another example of how AMD collaborates with leading partners to define the landscape of mobile gaming.”

“Through our partnership, we are developing the ecosystem for portable gaming, creating a new generation of powerful, portable, and affordable systems that deliver exceptional experiences regardless of where you play.”

If you’re interested in upgrading the storage of your portable gaming console, the new SSD is already available at JB Hi-Fi. The 1TB model is priced at $239 USD, while the 2TB model costs $439 USD.
