Being a video game fan can be a rollercoaster of emotions. While I’ve had the pleasure of playing some incredible games like Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Unicorn Overlord, it’s hard to escape the constant stream of bad news in the gaming industry. Layoffs, endless live service games, and an overall sense of doom and gloom have become all too common. It’s disheartening when all you want is a few hours of harmless fun.

Sony’s recent string of underwhelming showcases certainly doesn’t help improve the mood. The lack of excitement and anticipation for future releases makes it difficult to see a bright future in gaming. However, despite all this, I’ve still found joy in the games I currently own. Whether it’s tackling new titles, working through my backlog, or revisiting old favorites, my gaming experience has been fulfilling.

That’s why I’ve come to the decision that I won’t be buying a PlayStation 5 or any next-gen console. There are several reasons for this, although they may not seem directly connected. First and foremost, cost is a major factor. Everything these days seems to come with a hefty price tag, and the PlayStation 5 is no exception. With the added expense of more expensive games, it’s difficult for many gamers to justify the purchase.

The lack of new game announcements also plays a part in my decision. While it’s not the primary reason, the reality is that as a new dad, I simply have less time for gaming. This may be the case for anyone no longer in their 20s or below. However, even if I could afford a new console and find the time for it, the current state of the gaming industry has drained my enthusiasm. The lack of games and the ill-treatment of developers have left me questioning if gaming is still worth the effort.

I still enjoy playing video games, but the constant stream of smaller problems has taken its toll. At this point, I’m just tired of the console drama. Perhaps I’ll wait and see what the PlayStation 6 has to offer instead. Maybe by then, the industry will have addressed some of the issues plaguing it now. Until then, I’ll continue to find joy in the games I already own and pretend that this new generation never happened.
