The Unseen Path: A Journey into the Forgotten Call of Duty Game

In a surprising turn of events, a hidden gem from the world of Call of Duty has been unearthed. A glimpse into an unfinished game titled “Future Warfare” has surfaced, revealing what could have been a remarkable addition to the franchise. This game, developed by the now largely forgotten Neversoft, showcases an exhilarating lunar attack scenario and hints at an intriguing storyline through a task list.

The game, codenamed “NX1,” was the result of Neversoft’s venture into the gaming industry after their experience with Guitar Hero. Unfortunately, Activision decided to cancel the project, leaving Future Warfare incomplete. However, Neversoft managed to salvage a few campaign missions and work on the multiplayer mode, which were later integrated into the 2013 release, COD Ghosts. The Twitter video clip unveiling Future Warfare dates back to 2011.

Despite its untimely demise, Future Warfare has left a lasting impact on the Call of Duty franchise. It’s ironic that Infinity Ward, the studio that absorbed Neversoft, later released a game with a strikingly similar theme in 2016: Infinite Warfare. It seems that the ideas and concepts initially developed for Future Warfare resurfaced in this later installment.

According to developer Brian Bright, the original plan for Future Warfare was to introduce an “Escort” mode, a feature never before seen in the series. However, this mode was replaced in Call of Duty Ghosts, even though considerable progress had already been made in its development. The Twitter post’s comments section also included a list of multiplayer maps, revealing some classic favorites such as Afghan, Crash, Outpost, and many others.

It is worth noting that Neversoft’s transition from games like Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater to the development of a futuristic Call of Duty title did not meet with success. After contributing to the development of three Call of Duty games, Neversoft faded into obscurity following their merger with Infinity Ward in 2014.

If Future Warfare had been released, it would have paved the way for a series of futuristic Call of Duty games. The lineup would have included Black Ops II in 2012, Future Warfare in 2013, Advanced Warfare in 2014, Black Ops III in 2015, Infinite Warfare in 2016, and would have culminated in WWII in 2017.
