Providence College Students’ Behavior Draws Criticism
Providence College students found themselves in hot water over the weekend after their behavior during a basketball game against Georgetown caused a stir. While the game itself seemed unremarkable, with the PC Friars eventually emerging victorious, it was the conduct of some students that stole the spotlight.
Videos began circulating on social media showing a mob of students trampling each other. The scenes were shocking, and it quickly became clear that the students were not behaving in a way that reflected the values of the institution they represent.
The incident took place as a result of the departure of beloved former coach Ed Cooley, who left Friartown for Georgetown last spring. While changes in coaching staff are not uncommon, the students’ reaction to Cooley’s return to the AMP was deemed far from appropriate.
Instead of respecting the former coach’s decision and moving on, some students engaged in vulgar chants and displayed disrespectful behavior throughout the game. This behavior not only embarrassed Providence College but also tarnished the image of the majority of Providence Friar fans.
The college administration’s response to the incident has also come into question. Many believed that there should have been some form of counseling or guidance offered to the student fans prior to the game. However, it seems this was not the case. Instead, an email from the PC Office of Student Life appeared to encourage a sense of unity and passion, but failed to address the need for respectful behavior.
It is clear that an apology is necessary to rectify this situation. While an apology from Coach English, the Athletic Director, or a student organization would be a good step, it is imperative that the President of Providence College, Reverend Kenneth Sicard, O.P., publicly addresses the issue. This would send a strong message that such behavior is not tolerated and ensure that this embarrassing moment does not overshadow an otherwise successful Friar season.
As a lifelong Providence College Friar fan, I have watched the team for over 60 years and have always admired the integrity and sportsmanship associated with the institution. It is disheartening to witness such behavior from the current generation of students. It is my hope that they recognize the error of their ways and that Providence College takes swift action to address the issue and reinforce the values it holds dear.
