Newly unveiled footage on LinkedIn has given us a first glimpse at the cancelled TimeSplitters game, codenamed TimeSplitters Next, that was in development at Free Radical Design. The video reel showcases an early build of the game, captured in July 2023, just months before Free Radical Design was sadly shut down.
One striking aspect of TimeSplitters Next is its similarity to the popular game Fortnite, with a third-person over-the-shoulder perspective and combat footage that feels eerily familiar. The game would have also featured an open world-style map that players could explore, along with the option to hide within it. Parachutes would have been deployed to drop players onto the battlefield, and a cosmetics store would have provided customization options.
Interestingly, developers have revealed that TimeSplitters Next actually started as a „Fortnite clone” before evolving into something more ambitious. As we can see in the gameplay footage, elements of this original vision are still present.
