Another Code: Recollection – Games From the Past Reimagined

Ever since I immersed myself in the captivating world of Another Code: Recollection on the Nintendo Switch, a singular thought has occupied my mind. It lingers as I solve intricate puzzles and even during the seemingly ordinary transitions between locations. That thought, simply put, is that I can’t fathom the existence of this remarkable game.

Let me clarify, however, that Another Code: Recollection is far from being a mediocre game. Allow me to shed light on its true essence: a “fully enhanced” compilation of two games that skillfully blends the elements of mystery and puzzle-solving. The collection comprises Another Code: Two Memories, which made its debut nearly two decades ago on the Nintendo DS (known as Trace Memory in North America), and Another Code: R – A Journey into Lost Memories, which graced the Wii console 15 years ago but never reached the North American market.

Although both games garnered praise from reviewers, they never achieved immense popularity on paper. While Another Code: Recollection boasts improved visuals, fresh dialogues, and additional hint and navigation systems, it remains rooted in the core experiences of the original two games. Everything has been meticulously polished, yet the foundation remains unaltered.

In both games, whose intricate plots I won’t spoil, we follow the journey of the courageous protagonist, Ashley Mizuki Robbins. Ashley embarks on a quest to uncover the truth behind her parents’ mysterious disappearance. As players accompany her, new islands await exploration, packed with puzzles to solve and fragments of memories to unravel. I can assure you that the game’s allure surpasses its apparent simplicity, but it is by no means an amalgamation of Subway Surfers and TikTok.

However, it is increasingly evident that re-releasing older titles raises concerns for only a select few companies, even if games like Another Code initially captivate attention. For industry giants such as Nintendo, this endeavor becomes all the more intricate due to the existence of classic games on Nintendo Switch Online. Why introduce an entirely revamped version when porting older titles to a new platform suffices to satiate the majority? The digital availability of Golden Sun and similar classics seems a more straightforward solution than undertaking the arduous task of rebuilding them from scratch.

Furthermore, let us not forget that Cing, the very creator of these games, has been gone for well over a decade and a half. Though Cing delivered the critically acclaimed game Little King’s Story on the Wii just a year before their bankruptcy in March 2010, most of their major games published by Nintendo now reside in a state of perpetual limbo.

Only by considering this contextual backdrop can one genuinely comprehend the weight behind my statement, “I can’t believe this exists.” Truly, I can’t! Given the myriad reasons mentioned earlier, it becomes increasingly challenging to fathom the mere existence of Another Code: Recollection. While I refrain from delving too deeply into its significance, I must express my desire to witness games such as Hotel Dusk and its sequel receive similar treatment on the Nintendo Switch. Being able to obtain a tangible copy on its release day instills a sense of marvelous wonder, especially when it is the sole option available in stores.

With this perspective in mind, I hope that influential figures within Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox echo this sentiment. I yearn for a future where the release of old games in entirely rejuvenated forms ceases to surprise us. (If you’re listening, Sega, I would gladly offer everything for a localized version of Valkyria Chronicles 3.) Admittedly, I possess no insights into how the costs of such projects are covered, and I have an inkling that they were not explicitly calculated. Nonetheless, I fail to see an alternative. Let us hold onto hope. Perhaps Another Code: Recollection merely marks the dawn of an exhilarating trend, leading to the revival of countless games that have long faded into the abyss of distant memories.
