Is the Cost of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Development Lower Than Expected?

In a recent speech at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed doubts about the widely circulated claim that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) will cost $7 trillion. While acknowledging the significant advancements in computing that will contribute to the growth of AI, Huang believes that the cost will be considerably lower than projected.

Huang stressed that the acquisition of more computers is not the sole factor in AI development. He stated that the increasing speed and efficiency of integrated circuits, also known as semiconductor chips, will play a pivotal role in reducing costs. It is important to understand that integrated circuits are electronic components made up of interconnected semiconductors aimed at facilitating and miniaturizing electronics.

Contrary to recent reports, Huang does not believe that Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, will require $5 to $7 trillion for expanding AI applications. According to Bloomberg News, Huang believes that the industry’s consistent improvement in producing more cost-effective integrated circuits will render Altman’s investment plans unnecessary.

While Huang does not predict an overall decrease in AI expenditures, he anticipates that global spending on AI data centers will double within the next five years. Data centers are large facilities where vast amounts of data are stored and processed, typically for internet-based services such as data processing and storage. Huang explains this trend by stating, “We are at the beginning of a new era… There is about $1 trillion worth of installed data center value. Within the next four or five years, we’re going to have $2 trillion data centers powering software all over the world.”
